Advent Begins four Sundays before Christmas. Advent means "coming." It is a time to prepare for the "coming" of the Christ child. This season begins the church year. The beloved "Hosanna" hymn is sung on the first Sunday of Advent (and Palm Sunday) and the Moravian Star is hung in the sanctuary as preparation of the season. One candle on the Advent Wreath is lit each Sunday to mark this period of waiting Ash Wednesday This day marks the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season. It's a moving date (usually in February) based on Easter, and is usually observed with a worship gathering and the imposition of ashes on the forehead in the form of a cross. It provides worshipers with the opportunity to remember we are dust and to dust we shall return, thus setting the penitential and reflective tone of Lent. August 13th Festival A day of celebration and remembering for Moravians, often marked on the Sunday nearest with Lovefeast or Communion. On August 13, 1727, Moravians near Herrnhut, Germany felt a Pentecost-experience of the pouring out of the Holy Spirit that led to renewed energy for missions and ministry. This event serves also as renewal of the Lovefeast from the early church as those gathered ate together after worship to continue the worship experience (Acts 2). Band - Beginning Beginning band is open to anyone who wishes to learn to play. It is preferable for members to have their own instrument, though some loaner instruments are available. It specifies two scripture verses for each day of the year. The first (called the Watchword) is taken from the Hebrew Scriptures and is drawn by lot. "From (an) age-old collection of texts certain leading ministers of the Moravian Church in Herrnhut, Germany, draw a Watchword for each day of the approaching year, prayer being offered that each may be a message from God to His people." (from Customs and Practices of the Moravian Church by Adelaide L. Fries). The second text (called Doctrinal Text) is a New Testament verse chosen to expand the thought of the Watchword. Hymn verses and prayers are often provided in the various editions. It is then translated and published in over 50 languages for use around the world.
